Mental health with children and young people – I am a professional working with children and young people

Mental Health First Aid – Youth. Two day, face-to-face training for anyone working with children and young people, to recognise early signs of a mental health problem, provide help on a first aid basis, signpost to appropriate services and support recovery.

YoungMinds. One day training courses for professionals working with children and young people, including on looked-after young people, eating disorders, sexuality, self-harm, young offenders, bullying, autism, technology and parental mental health. Bespoke training and free online information also available.

Body Gossip. Half-day teacher training workshops and one hour sessions for students addressing body confidence in schools.

MAST. Two free, 1-day training courses in youth mental health, safeguarding and gangs for police officers and other frontline workers.

Emotional First Aid. 6 week, face-to-face training courses in supporting young people in distress, for professionals working with both primary-aged children and 11-25 year-olds. Note that training is also available for parents and peers.

Therapeutic Storywriting. Three-day training courses in using therapeutic storywriting with children and young people with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties.

Nurture groups. Face-to-face training courses for school staff or early years staff in running nurture groups, aimed at building resilience and emotional intelligence.

Harmless. One- and two-day training courses on self-harm and suicide prevention for anyone working with young people. Sessions also offered directly to young people in schools.

MindEd. Free, comprehensive e-learning courses developed by the Department of Health for anyone working with children and young people.

Papyrus. Face-to-face training in youth suicide prevention for anyone working with young people, including 2 day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training course (ASIST) as well as shorter talks and bespoke training options.

Mind. One day and half-day training courses for school and university staff in understanding and supporting adolescent mental health.

BEAT. One day, face-to-face training course in understanding eating disorders.

MAC-UK/Integrate. Five-day training course in mental health needs of excluded or vulnerable young people, including those in gangs. Bespoke options also available.

Child Trauma Academy. Free e-learning courses about supporting children who have experienced trauma.

School Wellbeing. Resources for promoting wellbeing in schools, including downloadable resources on PSHE, anti-bullying initiatives, self-harm, emotional literacy, drugs, bereavement. Many resources are free.

Tavistock Centre. A range of in-depth training courses in understanding and addressing emotional issues in young people. Face-to-face and online courses available.

Caspari Foundation. A range of training opportunities, as well as support and supervision, for school staff working with children with emotional or behavioural difficulties that impede their learning.
